I am, what I like to call, a perpetual planner. If I set my heart on a goal, I will spend days to months researching everything I need to know in order to achieve it. If this is you, then you may be familiar with the following process:

  1. Get excited by going on Pinterest, watching vlogs, and following influencers living out your dream.
  2. Do research on all of the qualifications required to make their lifestyle your reality.
  3. Look up the pros and cons of your goal with detailed scrutiny.
  4. Become discouraged by the labor, cost, and unforeseen downsides to your dream.
  5. Reality sinks in and you continue to wish for your dream but slowly accept the possibility that it may never be yours.
  6. Continue to consume content surrounding your dream. All the while, holding off on making the first move because you still have to “iron out all the kinks”.
  7. Months to years go by and you realize that you are in the same place as you have always been. You never progressed because it was never “the right time”.

Please allow me to speak to you as someone who has fallen into this trap for years: Stop planning your life and start living it!

I hate to burst the bubble of every perfectionist out there but there will never be a right time! Nothing will be perfect and laid out for you to start. You may never have all of the funds or the equipment to get started. You may not have the background or familial privilege. And your mind may never be as sharp as it used to be.

When you qualify yourself based on what you lack, you will never accomplish what God has placed in you. That’s because God never puts something in you that you can achieve through your own merit.

For we walk by faith, not by sight.

-2 Corinthians 5:7

If you have faith in the dream, the vision, or the life that God has placed in you, stop relying on sight to determine when you should start. If anything, rely on prayer, fasting, and the Word of God to determine your next steps.

The way I have begun to operate is like this: God will not let me destroy myself. If I move forward and I am going the wrong way He will redirect me. It’s as simple as that.

Stop making decisions solely based on your research and start moving according to your faith. Honey, he was able to make a married couple nearly a century old have a child! If He can qualify Abraham and Sarah, He can qualify you.

This doesn’t mean everything will work out the way you planned. It means everything will work out the way God intends. Heck! You may even realize that the original dream you had wasn’t even what you truly wanted. It may be the gateway to a completely different pursuit that God was preparing you for. And if you have failed the way I have failed trying to make my own plans, you know that He is the better option.

So with all the love in my heart hear me when I say: get out of your own way! Stop planning your life and start moving by faith.

With Love,

The Road Writer
